If your egg accidently cracks in boiling water, it’s not the end of the word. I know, but when we used to prepare Easter Eggs for painting, we didn’t want them to crack because it was more difficult to paint them and decorate them.
Even if you are just boiling your eggs to take to work for your lunch, you want to keep as much ‘inside’ the egg than leave most of the egg whites in the boiling water.
So, how do you prevent eggs from cracking in the boiling water?
It’s an easy trick, which I’ve learned when I was growing up, so that my Easter Eggs would be perfectly decorated and without a crack or a blemish.
- Prick your egg with a sharp small sewing pin on one side (the pointy bit of your egg is fine). This helps to even out the air pressure as the egg cooks in the boiling water.
- Bring the water to boil with the eggs already in (you place them in the water when it’s cold). Coun’t your 5 min or how ever your eggs want to be boiled for from the time that the water started to boil. Doing this will increase the pressure inside the egg slowly, meaning that the egg won’t crack as readily as if you ad it to the boiling water.
- Lower your eggs into the water gently. I know that’s obvious, but if you are a bit heavy-handed you might not even notice that your eggs have cracked as you drop them in the saucepan at the beginning.
- Add vinegar to the water. This won’t prevent the eggs from cracking but if they do, the vinegar in the water will help to set the egg whites a lot quicker than if it is just a plain water.
