Easy way to bake potatoes in your crock pot (and no need for the foil). Just add potatoes to the crock pot, switch it on and 6-8 hrs your potatoes will be baked. Make more baked potatoes than you need and freeze for later.
Perfect for sorting out your dinner in the morning! These crock pot baked potatoes are also perfect for freezing, so you can always make more than you need and stock up your freezer.
Potatoes are really good source of vitamins and fibre. What’s more important, is that most of that fibre is in the potato skin. This is why, it’s a great idea to bake the potatoes whole and eat them too!

Can I make crock pot baked potatoes without foil?
I’ve always made baked potatoes wrapped in foil, but recently I’ve started to leave them in the crock pot without the foil.
The baking foil is used to keep the potatoe moisture inside and to steam the potatoes. This makes the potatoes boiled from inside and they usually taste like ordinary boiled potatoes. Nothing wrong with that, but if you want your potatoes to be nice and crispy, leave the baking foil in your kitchen cupboard!
Without the baking foil, the potatoes will get slightly thicker skin and will make their flavour extra strong.
You don’t need to worry about the potatoes drying out in the crock pot, especially if you are baking a lot of potatoes together. Not only it’s more economical, but you also won’t get the potatoes drying out (which is what might happen if you have just one potato).

Toppings for baked potatoes
Once your baked potatoes are ready, you can add any topping you like, whether it’s meat based or vegetarian.
Make sure that your topping is already cooked through (like a chicken) or can be eaten fresh (like salads).

Side or main dishes to serve with your baked potatoes
Normally, I would just add few toppings to my baked potato and tuck in. But if you want to have a slightly large meal, you can add extra side dishes to serve with your baked potatoes.
Equally, you can make the baked potatoes as the side dish, cut it up a little and then serve with with your main meal.

What potatoes are best for baking ?
Whilst in theory, you can bake any type of potato, some potatoes are particularly good for baking.
Ideally you want large potatoes (so that they don’t dry out & get too brown too quickly), that are not too starchy (so that they don’t fall apart or taste too floury).
In the UK you can easily pick up large potatoes that are labeled as baking potatoes. You can also ask for Russet potatoes, Maris Piper or Kind Edwards, which are all great choice for baked potatoes.
Homemade seasoning recipes for crock pot baked potatoes
I find that freshly baked potato only need a bit of homemade herb butter and special salt seasoning and you have a meal! Here are my favourite recipes for seasoning mixes that go exceptionally well with potatoes.
How to make crock pot baked potatoes without foil
Wash the potatoes carefully, but leave the skin on.
Lay the potatoes in your crock pot (use as many as you have the space for, but keep them about the same size)
Close the lid, switch on and bake/cook on very low setting for 8 hours – overnight or during the day.
Season with salt and pepper and serve with butter and your choice of toppings.
Can you freeze crock pot baked potatoes?
Yes, you can freeze baked potatoes for up to 6 months.
I found that it’s best to freeze the baked potatoes individually as it gives me a better chance to control my food preparation. To freeze your baked potatoes, leave them first to cool down completely on a cooling rack or somewhere where they can cool down evenly (and not touching each other).
This helps to keep the potatoes intact and not make them soggy.
Wrap the baked potatoes in cling film or small plastic bags and freeze them separately in the freezer.
How to defrost frozen baked potatoes
To defrost your baked potato, remove them from the freezer the night before you need them and defrost them in the fridge.
If you are short of time, you can also defrost frozen baked potato in the microwave. Use either low microwave setting or a specific defrost setting if your microwave has that. Depending on the size of your potatoes, the defrosting times can be 30 seconds – 1 minute per large potato.
Since potatoes are quite safe food, you can also defrost them in a room temperature.
For example if you remember that you need potatoes for lunch and you take them out in the morning, they should be fine to defrost in the kitchen (loosely opened packaging). Make sure that if you do defrost the potatoes this way, you eat them on the same day (just in case they might start to go off).
How to make the potato skin crisp again (after it’s been frozen & defrosted)
When you defrost your baked potatoes, they will, unfortunately, lose their crisp potato skin.
To make the potato skin crisp again, bake the defrosted potatoes for 10-15 minutes (maximum) on 220 Celsius or 400 Fahrenheit.
Can you freeze again potatoes that have been previously frozen?
I wouldn’t recommend re-freezing potatoes that have been previously frozen as this can cause bacteria developing and the potatoes getting eventually spoiled.
The only time when I’d freeze again previously frozen potatoes is if I had an incident with the freezer and it for whatever reason got switched off, and I needed to re-freeze everything again.
Potatoes are not going to go off quickly, so they will withstand a slightly defrosting and then freezing again.
