This chili spice mix recipe can be made in advance and used for making homemade chili dishes or used as a seasoning in stews, meats or other main dishes. You can make your own strength, depending on how hot or spicy you like your chili.

The chili mix in this recipe is about ‘medium’ – e.g. spicy, but it’s not going to numb your tongue! Once you make it and try it, you are welcome to adjust it to your liking. Here is what I normally do if I want to create milder or hotter version of my chili spice mix.

Mild chili spice mix

  • Use mild chili spice powder
  • Lover the amount of chili
  • Use white pepper as it’s less hot than black pepper or cayenne pepper
  • Lower the amount of pepper
  • Up the amount of sweet paprika, which is not spicy or hot at all. I use smoked sweet paprika, which has a lovely taste
  • Up the amount of herbs in this recipe

Hot chili spice mix

  • Use hot chili spice powder
  • Up the amount of chili powder
  • Use cayenne pepper
  • Up the amount of pepper

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 teaspoons chili
  • 1 1/2 tablespoon paprika (red sweet pepper)
  • 1 teaspoon sugar white or brown
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
  • 2 1/2 teaspoon fine salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper or cayenne pepper or white pepper
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme or basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley or oregano

Before you get started with this recipe

Make sure that all your spices are ground or of a fine texture. It’s usually easier to buy ground version of any spice as it’s going to be much finer than if you try to ground your spices at home.

Most spices are easily available in the shops, but the onion and garlic powder could be a little trickier to source. I think it’s still worth getting them as it makes it much easier to make the actual chilli. If you know that you prefer to use fresh onions and garlic when you are cooking your chili, you can leave them out.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Measure out all the spices and add them to a small bowl.
  • Mix all the spices well.
  • Store your chili spice mix in an airtight container and use it within 3 months.
