This is my perfect way to start the day - a chocolate oat smoothie. This recipe is very easy to make and includes only chocolate, oats, yoghurt, water and a pinch of salt.
I've also made this recipe sugar free since there is already a bit of sugar in the chocolate or the yoghurt. If you really want to you can always add a bit of sugar, honey, maple syrup or use milk chocolate with higher sugar content.
I made this recipe, when I wanted to have something simpler than Chocolate, Peanut Butter & Banana Smoothie, which I normally have for breakfast.
PIN TO KEEP FOR LATER

Why make this recipe?
- Easy to make smoothie
- Made with no added sugar
- Filling breakfast
- Budget friendly recipe
If you want to increase the amount of protein, you can always add an egg to your smoothie, whilst keeping the flavour the same.
My favourite tip when making this recipe
Don't forget to add the tiny pinch of salt to your smoothie mix. Salt is great for pulling all the flavours together and I think it sort of sharpens the flavour too. You don't need to worry, your chocolate smoothie won't taste salty, just make sure you only ad a tiny pinch.

Ingredients & substitutions
Chocolate
To make this chocolate smoothie, I use pretty much any chocolate I have at hand. The darker the chocolate the deeper the flavour, but you can easily use milk chocolate bar if that's all you have.
Plain chocolate is naturally high in protein and fibre and low in sugar, which of course is better than sweet milk or white chocolate.
You can also use cocoa powder instead of chocolate.
Oats
You are welcome to use any type of oats you have at home. I normally use basic breakfast (rolled) oats, but then I pour boiling water over them and cook them in the microwave to soften them. This makes the smoothie thicker and it also prevents the liquid from separating.
I think it's better to do this, than to use instant oats, which have extra sugar.
Yoghurt
To provide me with extra flavour, to add protein to my smoothie, and a bit of sugar, I tend to use full-fat Greek yoghurt. I usually use dairy-free version, but you can use any type of yoghurt you like.
If you don't have yoghurt, use any type of milk you have.

Additional flavours you can add to your chocolate oat smoothie
There are lots of ways to make smoothies taste great without adding sugar. I try to resist adding sugar to my breakfast smoothie by adding warming spices, such as sweet cinnamon or my homemade spice mixes. My chocolate oat smoothie goes well with a pinch of these spices:
- Sweet or regular cinnamon powder
- Star Anise Spice - my new favourite spice, which goes so well with chocolate
- Gingerbread Spice Mix
- Breakfast Oats Spice Mix

Preparing the oats for your smoothie
Whilst oats are super healthy and full of fibre and other nutrition, they could be also slightly difficult (for some people) to digest.
This is why I always pre-soak the oats, partly cook them in boiling water or at leave them to soak overnight.
If you don't have the time to do this, just follow my recipe with my boiling water trick, which softens the oats and helps to melt the chocolate at the same time.

How to make chocolate oats smoothie recipe
Measure out the oats and pour boiling water over them, just enough to cover.
Add the chocolate or cocoa powder to the hot oats. This will melt the chocolate and help to blend in better.
Leave the oats mixture to cool down (if you have the time)
Add a pinch of salt and the yoghurt.
Blend everything together and adjust the taste to suit with a bit more chocolate or even sugar.
How to keep & store your smoothie
Drink straight away or keep in the fridge for no longer than few hours. If you know you are not going to finish your smoothie within few hours, it's best to freeze your smoothie on the same day.
